Jury Awards $12.5M to Abuse Victim as Weil Law Firm Wins Case Against Baptist Convention

A Lake County jury awarded $12.5 million to a man who was sexually abused as a child by Baptist minister Douglas W. Myers, holding the Florida Baptist Convention responsible for failing to properly vet him. Attorney Ron Weil of Weil Quaranta McGovern led the case, arguing that the convention neglected to investigate Myers’ past allegations of misconduct. Weil emphasized the verdict as a crucial step toward justice, reaffirming the responsibility of religious institutions to protect children from harm.
