Miami Jury Awards $6.7M in Sex Abuse Case Against Church

A Miami-Dade jury awarded $6.7 million to Daniel Artis, a victim of sexual abuse by a youth minister at Wayside Baptist Church. Represented by attorney Ron Weil, Artis successfully argued that the church was negligent in hiring and supervising Keith Geren, who molested multiple teenage boys. The jury found Wayside liable for failing to conduct background checks, despite prior warnings about Geren’s behavior. While the church plans to appeal, the verdict sends a strong message about accountability in institutions entrusted with children’s safety.
